New Chlor-Alkali Plant on West Coast Planned

Equapac Incorporated (Portland, Oregon) is in the final phases of planning for the construction of a new plant that will produce approximately 75,000 tons per year of chlorine and bleaching products in Longview, Washington (Plant 1061057). This new plant will be located on Weyerhaeuser Company's pulp and paper mill site, which will receive a bulk of the new capacity. Industrialinfo.com first reported this project in June of 2003 (PEC 21001183).

Equapac has recently hired Universal Dynamics (Vancouver, Washington) to manage the construction of this project and coordinate its startup. Some infrastructure remains from a previously existing chlorine unit that Weyerhaeuser dismantled several years ago. Much of the equipment for the new plant was purchased, dismantled, and relocated from the former Atofina plant site in Portland, Oregon. The equipment is being stored onsite in Longview while the company waits for permit and capital approval this fall.

Construction could begin very early next year, with completion and the production of merchant product by late summer 2004. The plant will employ nearly 50 people. Terminal operations for caustic soda could begin much sooner depending on approvals.
