New Industrialinfo.com Radio Program Focuses on Capital Spending Trends in the Power Industry

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The Power industry is expected to hold its strength during 2003 with a record amount of capital spending approaching $35 billion. For the past couple of years, capital spending in the Power Industry has reached an all time high and is expected to continue in 2003 as merchant power plant construction begins to peak.

"Despite a significant number of project cancellations and delays, new generation capacity in 2003 may represent as much as 70,000 megawatts (MW), based on our research of the industry," commented Britt Burt, Power Group manager with Industrialinfo.com. Mr. Burt added, "We are currently tracking approximately 269 projects that are under development representing 138,000 MW and over $74 billion scheduled to start construction in 2003 although project delays and cancellations will bring those numbers down by nearly half as the year progresses."

Mounting pressure from environmental requirements to control NOx and SO2 emissions in existing equipment will continue to drive owners of coal-fired plants, natural gas and oil-fired plants develop strategies to comply with State Implemented Programs (SIP) and Clean Air Act (CAA). New construction will also play a major role in capital investments in coming years as Private Energy Producer's (PEP) build new capacity for future deregulated markets.
