Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--New Mexico, the second-largest oil producer in the U.S., has a great deal more than just oil activity in its industrial landscape. The state's projects show a variety of sectors and industries that are actively underway with construction, including the Industrial Manufacturing, Power and Metals & Minerals industries. Industrial Info is tracking more than $7.9 billion worth of projects under construction in the state.

A project from Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) (Santa Clara, California) accounts for more than $3 billion of the state's current project spending. While benefitting from 2022's CHIPS and Science Act, which provides about $39 billion in subsidies for projects to manufacture computer chips on U.S. soil, Intel's plans to upgrade its chip-manufacturing complex in Rio Rancho, which is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area, began before the passage of the act.

Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor Exyte US Incorporated (Albany, New York) kicked off construction on the project for Intel in the first half of 2022. The project includes upgrading and modernizing an existing chip-manufacturing building, and installing new production lines and equipment to make the Rio Rancho location Intel's global manufacturing hub for its new Foveros chips, which can be vertically stacked, providing a smaller usage footprint. The project is expected to be completed toward the end of next year. Also related to the computing sector, Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California) is putting the finishing touches on a few buildings at its data center complex in Los Lunas. The final two buildings, each approximately 300,000 square feet, are expected to be completed early next year. The data center initially began operating in 2019, and Meta has been constructing additional buildings for the complex since that time. After the completion of the buildings early next year, Industrial Info is tracking no further active projects at the site. Subscribers can click here for the related reports.

The Power Industry also is very active in New Mexico, with more than $1.5 billion worth of projects under construction, mostly for solar power. Examples include Enlight Renewable Energy's (NASDAQ:ENLT) (Rosh Haayin, Israel) Atrisco solar farm, which is under construction near Albuquerque. Construction on the project began earlier this year and is expected to be completed next summer, when it will begin providing nameplate generation of 400 megawatts (MW) to the grid. For times when the sun isn't shining, the facility will feature a 200-MW battery energy storage system. The solar farm is expected to help replace the loss of power from retiring fossil fuel plants in the region. Subscribers can click here to learn more.

While Industrial Info isn't tracking any wind projects that are currently underway in New Mexico, a project to manufacture wind turbine towers recently began in Belen. Arcosa Incorporated (Dallas, Texas) is at work on the site of a former plastics plant that stopped operating in 2020. The turbine tower plant will include assembly lines, automation and robotics, and a shipping/packaging/loading system, among other additions. The plant will be completed in 2024. Earlier this year, Arcosa announced that it had received $750 million in new tower orders, mostly for the Southwestern U.S., which the Belen plant will help fulfill, starting next summer. Another Metals & Minerals project in New Mexico involves neighboring Texas as well. Atlas Energy Solutions (Austin, Texas) is underway with construction on its Dune Express project, a 42-mile overland conveyor system to transport frac sand from its origin point in Kermit, Texas, across the state line to oil and gas operations in New Mexico. The project is designed to help alleviate heavy road traffic in the Permian Basin, lowering emissions from transport as a result. The conveyor will feature two permanent loadouts--one at the state line and the other at end of the line in New Mexico--as well as flexible mobile loadouts to further shorten sand transit to well sites. The project began earlier this year and is expected to be completed toward the end of 2024. Subscribers can click here for more information.
