Summary
NextEra pointed to a long list of growth projects for the foreseeable future, including the proposed revival of a nuclear power plant in Iowa.

Solar, BESS Capacity on the Rise

NextEra Energy Incorporated (Juno Beach, Florida) followed strong results for the third quarter of 2025 with plans to build out its power-generation capacity from two non-fossil-fuel sources: solar and nuclear. Industrial Info is tracking more than $87 billion worth of active and proposed projects from NextEra, more than $68 million of which is attributed to grassroot projects.

Despite a less friendly atmosphere for renewable energy in Washington, D.C., NextEra continued to extend its leading role in low-carbon power during the third quarter, adding 3 gigawatts (GW) of capacity to its solar-generation and battery energy-storage system (BESS) backlog.

"With these additions, [renewables-focused subsidiary] NextEra Energy Resources' backlog now totals nearly 30 GW, after taking into account more than 1.7 GW of new projects placed into service since the second-quarter 2025 financial results call in July," the company said in its quarterly earnings-related press release. "NextEra Energy Resources expects the backlog additions will go into service over the next few years and into 2029."

Texas accounts for more than $8 billion worth of NextEra's active and proposed solar projects, including the Hickerson Solar Plant in Laguna Park, roughly 50 miles southwest of the Dallas area. The project, which is expected to finish construction in the coming months, could see a BESS unit added in the next few years, pending approval.

Another leading state for NextEra's solar buildout is Florida, where subsidiary Florida Power & Light Company expects to finish construction early next year on the Tenmile Creek Solar Energy Center in Altha, about 50 miles west of Tallahassee. It will use about 250,000 photovoltaic (PV) panels provided by First Solar Incorporated (Tempe, Arizona). Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report and plant profile.

By the Numbers
  • Industrial Info is tracking more than $87 billion worth of active and proposed projects from NextEra
  • The backlog for NextEra's renewables-focused subsidiary now totals nearly 30 GW
  • Texas accounts for more than $8 billion of NextEra's solar pipeline

Is a Nuclear Renaissance on the Horizon?

The most surprising announcement from NextEra's earnings report is a new collaboration with Alphabet Incorporated (Mountain View, California), the parent company of Google, to restart the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Palo, Iowa. The power plant, which closed in 2020, could return to operations as early as 2029, pending regulatory approval.

"Once operational, Google will purchase power from the 615-MW plant as a 24/7, carbon-free energy source to help power Google's growing cloud and AI [artificial intelligence] infrastructure in Iowa, while strengthening local grid reliability," NextEra said in a press release separate from the quarterly results. NextEra also said the Central Iowa Power Cooperative, which is the state's largest energy provider, had agreed to buy any electricity not consumed by Google.

The U.S. has been showing a renewed interest in nuclear energy over the past few years, especially with a looming boom in energy demand from data centers. Earlier this year, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approved Holtec International's (Jupiter, Florida) licensing package to reauthorize the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in Covert, Michigan. This is the first time a shuttered U.S. nuclear plant has received approval to reopen, and the NRC is looking at reviving licenses for several other plants as well.

Subscribers can learn more about Palisades from a detailed project report and plant profile. For more information about nuclear's return to power, see October 22, 2025, article - Closed U.S. Nuclear Plant Reaches Another Reopening Milestone.

NextEra reported $8 billion in revenues for third-quarter 2025, a 5.3% increase from the same period last year; its net income stood at $2.44 billion, a 31.6% increase.
