Nicaragua: Geothermal San Jacinto Tizate Phase I Fully Operational

Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Ram Power Corporation (TSX:RPG) (Reno, Nevada) and Polaris Energy Nicaragua (Managua, Nicaragua) recently announced that the Phase I expansion at San Jacinto-Tizate has begun commercial operation.

The facility, located in the northwest part of the country, approximately 100 kilometers north of the capital city of Managua, added a 36-megawatt (MW) single-flash Fuji Electric (Tokyo, Japan) turbine generator-set to the existing 10-MW power plant, turning the unit over to the Nicaraguan national integrated electrical grid operator.

The second phase of the project, requiring a total investment value of $160 million, will expand the facility to a total of 82 MW and is expected to be completed in the final quarter of 2012.

Nicaragua is rich in geothermal resources, with several active volcanoes and natural fumaroles occurring in various parts of the nation. San Jacinto-Tizate is one of the largest geothermal reservoirs under development in the world.
