Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Food and Beverage Industry in North America recorded $1.4 billion in new project activity at manufacturing sites and distribution facilities in April, according to data from Industrial Info. Capital expenditures total $1.4 billion from 76 projects, while maintenance expenditures total $24 million across 16 projects. Projects range in investment value from $500,000 to $400 million.
Planned investments in the U.S. total approximately $1.3 billion from 77 projects. Mexico has eight projects worth $79 million, and Canada has seven projects worth $32 million.
From a regional standpoint, new project activity is the highest in the Midwest market region, with 18 projects valued at $475 million. Both the Southwest and Great Lakes market regions tally 13 new projects with figures of $82 million and $113 million, respectively.
When including planned maintenance shutdowns, there are 74 projects listed in the planning stages that are worth $533 million, while 16 projects valued at $775 million are in the approval and engineering phases. Figures for projects already approved are inflated, based on a single $400 million project that calls for the expansion of a research and development facility to include greenhouses.
There are two projects with a combined value of $113 million in which construction is under way, but they still are open to future opportunities for subcontracting, purchasing equipment and supplies. Grassroot construction activity reported for April resulted in plans to build eight new plants for a total of $201 million.
Industrial Info's database of active capital and maintenance expenditures for the Food and Beverage Industry across North America, as well as the Sugar Processing Industry and Water Desalination Segment worldwide, shows current expenditures of $41.2 billion for more than 1,875 active projects. The 1,250 active projects in North America are valued at more than $23.9 billion.
