Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The North Anna Nuclear Station (Mineral, Virginia), which is owned by Dominion Generation, a subsidiary of Dominion Energy (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia), shut down its 972-megawatt (MW) Unit 2 after finishing a 33-day refueling and maintenance outage. Plant sources said that they had to trip the unit offline due to an issue with a bearing in the main turbine.
The unit had ramped up to 60% when it was tripped. Plant officials said that they were experiencing balancing issues as well. Officials said that they were not exactly sure how long the duration of the repairs would last, because they are in a premature stage of the investigation. After the analysis is completed, repairs will resume. The unit is projected to return online by Friday May 17, if there are no delays. The North Anna Nuclear station has two generating units. When at full load, the plant is capable of generating 1,952 MW.
Dominion, one of the largest U.S. producers and transporters of energy, has a portfolio of approximately 27,500 megawatts of generation; 11,000 miles of natural gas transmission, gathering and storage pipelines; and 6,300 miles of electric transmission lines.
