Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (New Delhi, India)--With the commissioning of the third 660-megawatt (MW) supercritical unit at its Sipat super-thermal power station, India's state-owned power enterprise NTPC Limited (BSE:532555) (New Delhi, India) has finally achieved full-load generation from Sipat stage-I units. The third unit of the stage-I project was synchronized on April 2, 2012, but it could achieve full-load generation only on May 25, 2012.
The first and the second 660-MW supercritical units of the plant were commissioned in June 2011 and December 2012, respectively, and currently are in operation.
Sipat power plant has been developed in two stages with a total capacity of 2,980 MW. Stage I consists of three 660-MW supercritical technology-based units, and Stage II consists of two 500 MW-units based on traditional coal-fired technology that were commissioned in 2007.
Execution of the Sipat I project has faced recurrent delays due to contractual disputes between NTPC and its vendors, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Limited (Changwon, South Korea) and Power Machines (Moscow, Russia). Power equipment manufacturer Doosan has been awarded the contract for the boiler package, while Power Machines supplied turbines and auxiliaries to the plant.
With the commissioning of this new generation, the operating capacity of the plant increased to 2,980 MW. The power plant meets its fuel needs from the Dipika Mines, owned by South Eastern Coalfields Limited. The water requirement for the plant is met from the Hasdeo Barrage Canal. The beneficiary states of the Sipat plant are Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Daman & Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
With an installed capacity of 38,674 MW, NTPC is the largest power-generating firm in the country. Presently, NTPC generates power primarily from coal and gas. The company is diversifying into hydropower, coal mining and power equipment manufacturing. NTPC currently operates 15 coal-fired plants, seven gas-fired plants and six other power stations in joint ventures with various public sector companies.
