Nuclear Regulatory Commission Green Light for Westinghouse Reactor Supports 13.2 Gigawatt Expansion

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)-- Westinghouse Electric Company (Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania) a group company of Toshiba Corporation (TKY: 6502), (Tokyo. Japan) got design certification amendment from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) on their AP1000 pressurized water reactors (PWR). This certification will help utilities to start forward with the addition of twelve units being added at four existing nuclear power stations (two each) and the construction of two (2) unit grassroot stations. Each planned unit is expected to produce roughly 1,100-megawatts (MW) adding an additional 13,200-MW to the grid in the southeastern United States.

The nuclear units under development are:

• Progress Energy Carolina Incorporated a subsidiary of Progress Energy Incorporated (NYSE: PGN) (Raleigh, North Carolina) units #2 and #3 at the existing Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Station in New Hill, North Carolina that currently has a single 900-MW unit.

• Duke Energy Carolinas LLC a subsidiary of Duke Energy Company NYSE: DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) is looking at the grassroot William States Lee III Nuclear Power Station units #1 and #2 in Cherokee Falls, South Carolina).

• South Carolina Electric & Gas Company a subsidiary of SCANA Corporation (NYE: SGC) (Columbia, South Carolina) units #2 and #3 additions at the Virgil C Summer Nuclear Station in Jenkinsville, South Carolina that currently has a single 966-MW unit.

• Alvin W Vogtle Nuclear Power Station units #3 and #4 (Waynesboro, Georgia) owned by Georgia Power Company a subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE: SO) (Atlanta, Georgia), Oglethorpe Power Corporation (Tucker, Georgia), Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia (MEAG) (Atlanta, Georgia) and Dalton Water & Light Commission (Dalton, Georgia) that currently operated by Southern Company Nuclear Services a subsidiary of Southern Company and has two units produces 2,300-MW.

• Progress Energy Florida Incorporated a subsidiary of Progress Energy Incorporated is looking at the grassroot Levy County Nuclear Power Station units #1 and #2 in Inglis, Florida.

• Florida Power and Light Company a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE: NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) is looking to add units #6 & #7 to its existing 1386-MW Turkey Point Nuclear Power Station in Homestead, Florida.
