Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--As Nucor Corporation (NYSE:NUE) (Charlotte, North Carolina) puts the finishing touches on a steel tube mill addition to help supply the U.S. solar market, the company already has contracted with NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) to supply the steel used for two upcoming solar farms in Kentucky.
Nucor announced that it would build the steel tube mill at its Gallatin plant near Ghent, Kentucky, in 2021. Construction began the following year and is now wrapping up. Once operational, the mill will be able to supply up to 250,000 tons per year of hollow structural section tubing, mechanical steel tubing and galvanized solar torque tube, which will increase Nucor's offerings in the expanding U.S. solar market. Solar power accounted for the highest capacity of U.S. power installations in the first half of 2023. For more information, see August 9, 2023, article - EIA: U.S. Installs 16.8 Gigawatts of Power in First Half of 2023. The tube mill already has found a willing customer in the form of NextEra Energy. Output from the Gallatin mill be used in NextEra's upcoming Sebree solar farm in Henderson County, Kentucky. The Sebree solar farm will be built in two phases, the first of which will provide 250 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity, followed by the second phase, which will add another 150 MW. The first phase of construction will add more than 850,000 solar panels and is expected to begin later this year. The second, 150-MW phase is expected to be completed in 2025. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can learn more by viewing the reports on Phase I and Phase II construction.
But Nucor is doing more than just supplying steel to the solar farm--it will also be its customer. In keeping with its emissions-reductions goals, Nucor has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with NextEra for 250 MW of power from the Sebree plant. The PPA is the second signed this month by NextEra with a U.S. steel producer. Steel Dynamics Incorporated (NASDAQ:STLD) (Fort Wayne, Indiana) recently announced that it had signed a PPA with NextEra for the output from an upcoming Texas windfarm. For more information, see August 4, 2023, article - NextEra Energy Helps Steel Dynamics Go Greener.
Nucor also will supply steel for another NextEra solar farm in Kentucky. The Green River solar farm, which will be built in Meade and Breckenridge counties, will generate up to 200 MW of power. Construction is expected to begin next year, with completion in 2025. Subscribers can click here for more details.
The PPA between NextEra and Nucor will help Nucor meet its emissions-reductions goal, which aims for a 35% reduction in scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gases from a 2015 baseline by 2030. Other moves to help achieve this include a 3 ton-per-day carbon capture system at its Gallatin thin coil mill in order to study the effectiveness of the system and its feasibility for replication at other electric arc furnaces. The undertaking is one of 12 research projects being funded by a U.S. Department of Energy grant to advance point-source carbon capture and storage technologies. Nucor is partnering with the University of Kentucky on the project. Subscribers can click here for the project report.
