Resilience Amid Uncertainty

Oceania's Metals & Minerals industry shows resilience in third-quarter 2026 despite ongoing global economic uncertainty. Commodity performance continues to diverge, with strong activity in gold, copper and critical minerals, while bulk commodities face a more cautious investment environment.

Oceania includes Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and a host of island chains in the Pacific Ocean. According to Industrial Info Resources data, there are nearly 2,200 active capital metals and minerals projects in Oceania, with a total investment value of almost US$176 billion.

Gold continues to be the strongest-performing commodity, supported by geopolitical tensions. High gold prices are encouraging mergers among Australian gold producers, with acquired historical mothballed processing plants to refurbish and modify, as well as the development of satellite deposits and mill expansions.

Copper is one of the most attractive commodities, driven by long-term demand from renewable energy, electric vehicles, AI data centers and electricity grid upgrades. Across Oceania, most copper projects are progressing through feasibility studies, approvals and development planning phases. However, investors and mining companies remain cautious regarding capital expenditure due to high construction costs, inflationary pressures and project financing requirements.

Critical minerals and rare earths are a strategic priority in Australia, supported by government funding through loans, grants and tax incentives. Government initiatives have encouraged increased pilot plant testing, feasibility studies and downstream processing developments to strengthen domestic supply chains and reduce reliance on overseas processing.

Iron ore is Australia's largest export commodity. Expansions have slowed down as major producers focus on sustaining production, replacing depleting reserves and improving operational efficiency rather than pursuing large-scale greenfield developments.

Lithium entered a recovery phase following the oversupply and weak pricing environment experienced during 2023-2025. Rather than rapidly developing new greenfield projects, lithium producers are prioritizing lower-cost and higher-quality deposits, expansions of existing operations and downstream processing opportunities to improve project economics and market competitiveness.

Nickel remains under pressure due to continued oversupply and weak pricing conditions. Many companies are focusing on cost reduction, operational optimization and preserving capital until market conditions improve. Some nickel operators have placed processing facilities into care and maintenance or divested assets, with certain facilities being considered for refurbishment and conversion to process gold ore.

The outlook for coal is mixed. Metallurgical coal project development is positive due to its critical role in global steel production, particularly in emerging markets. In contrast, thermal coal development is expected to slow over the long term as the adoption of renewable energy increases and countries transition toward lower-emission power generation.

Key Takeaways

  • Lithium is in a recovery phase due to oversupply and weak pricing.
  • Iron ore remains Australia's largest export commodity.
  • Critical minerals and rare earths are a strategic priority in Australia.
