Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Northland Power Incorporated's (Toronto, Ontario) 100-megawatt (MW) Grand Bend Windfarm started operations earlier this month in Southern Ontario.
The windfarm is located on 6,000 acres near the eastern shore of Lake Huron and utilizes Siemens wind turbine technology to generate enough electricity to power over 30,000 homes. This project was proposed and approved under the provincial Feed-In-Tariff (FIT) program.
Although Northland Power developed and owns the project, Siemens will be responsible for operations and maintenance under a 10-year service agreement. Amec Foster WheelerBlack & McDonald Limited built the facility. The project had a total investment of $220 million, and took just over a year to reach commercial operations.
