Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Grand Gulf Nuclear Station, which is located in Port Gibson, Mississippi, shut down its 1,259-megawatt (MW) Unit 1 on October 4 for repairs. Plant officials confirmed that they experienced a problem with an overheated transformer. The station is owned by System Energy Resources Incorporated (Jackson Mississippi), a subsidiary of Entergy Corporation Incorporated (NYSE:ETR).
Plant officials continue to investigate the cause, but expect the outage to be short. They said that the unit could be ready to return online by Thursday, October 10, foregoing additional delays.
The Grand Gulf station began operations in 1985 and has one generating unit. When at full load, generating capacity can reach 1,311 MW.
System Energy Resources Incorporated, which generates and sells nuclear power in the U.S., holds 90% and a leasehold interest in the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station.
