Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Panda Energy International Incorporated (Dallas, Texas) and subsidiary Panda Temple LLC (Temple, Texas) held a groundbreaking event last week to mark the start of construction on a new natural gas-fired power generation station in Temple.
Phase I of the project involves developing the greenfield 250-acre site with a 600-megawatt (MW) segment that will generate enough electricity to power 900,000 homes. The combined-cycle plant will use natural gas from the Barnett Shale play in the Bend Arch-Fort Worth basin in North Texas.
The plant will be fitted with two 208-MW Siemens STG6-5000FD Combustion Turbine Generator sets with a heat recovery steam generator driving a single 342-MW Siemens steam turbine.
Phase I is expected to be completed and be online by late 2014, and a second phase using the same configuration could be operating by late 2015.
Panda selected Bechtel Power Construction (Frederick, Maryland) as the turn-key engineering, procurement and construction contractor. The estimated $650 million plant will be located southeast of Temple, some 34 miles south of Waco.
Panda currently has 10 plants in service that are capable of producing more than 9,000 MW of generating capacity.
