Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A preliminary feasibility study has been approved by a panel organized by the East China Electric Consulting Company (Shanghai) for a cogeneration project to replace several smaller units with fewer larger units at the 600-megawatt (MW) Guodian Suzhou Thermal Power Plant in Suzhou, Anhui province. The plant is owned by China Guodian Corporation (Beijing), one of China's top five nationwide power producers.

The plant currently has a total installed capacity of 300 MW with four cogeneration units and three heat-supply pipelines. In order to abide by the nation's policy toward energy conservation and emissions reduction by replacing small units with large units, China Guodian plans to shut down two units at the plant by the end of 2008 and another unit by the end of 2010 totaling 165 MW. The company will install two 300-MW cogeneration units as replacements.

The facility is a major heat source that is being developed for Suzhou. The two 300-MW cogeneration units could improve the city's comprehensive energy utilization rate upon completion. According to the feasibility study, the project could reduce soot by 70.1% and sulfur-dioxide emissions by 82.3%. It could also save about 86 grams of coal per kilowatt-hour.
