Peach Bottom Nuclear Power Station Prepares for Outage

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On September 6, 2007, the Peach Bottom Nuclear Power Station (Delta, Pennsylvania) began preparing for its refueling and maintenance outage by performing flux (power) suppression and safety tests that lasted almost five days. However, these tests were not conducted on the unit scheduled for the September 23, 2007, refueling/maintenance outage, but rather on Peach Bottom’s Unit 2, with the soon-to-be offline Unit 3 humming along at 100% capacity (1,152 megawatts). Plant personnel said the tests are a routine way of ensuring the highest probability that they will have 50% of generating capacity (nearly 1,150 megawatts) online at all times during the scheduled three-week-plus outage.

The Peach Bottom facility includes two General Electric boiling water reactors (BWR) and two General Electric tandem-compound turbine/generator sets. Unit 2 came online in 1973 with an operating license set to expire in 2013, and Unit 03 became operational in 1973, with a license set to expire in 2014. The nuclear plant is operated by Exelon Nuclear (Warrenville, Illinois), and owned by the nuclear division’s parent company, Exelon Corporation (NYSE:EXC ) (Chicago, Illinois).
