Peruvian Solar Power Capacity is Expected to Increase by 2,447 MW by 2028

Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Peru has a solar energy portfolio with a combined capacity of 2,447 megawatts (MW), which are expected to come online by 2028, according to the Peruvian Association of Renewable Energy. Twelve of the projects are in the Arequipa, Moquegua and Ica regions and will be connected to the national electric system (SEIN), while two of them will be isolated systems in the Loreto province.

Industrial Info is tracking 101 active solar power projects in Peru, worth US$13.68 billion. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here for the project reports.

According to the Peruvian Association of Renewable Energy, some 1,138 MW of new solar power capacity will come online this year, with another 637 MW projected to start operations by 2026 to bring the nation's photovoltaic capacity to 2,250 MW.

Last year, the South American nation added 195.48 MW of new solar capacity to reach a total of 476.66 MW.

Yet solar power generation represented only 2% of Peru's national electricity production in 2024, despite registering an increase of 32% compared with the 2023 output.

The share of power generation capacity in the national grid is expected to continue growing with the construction and start of operations of new solar power plants in the country and incentives from the state.

In December, the Peruvian Congress extended the fiscal benefits for renewable technologies, including solar, until December 2030. This aims to attract investments and help the country reach its goal of increasing renewable energy capacity 150% by 2030.

In January, Congress passed a law promoting the diversification of the electricity matrix, aimed at attracting investments, establishing a framework for power purchase agreements, reducing barriers and enabling the development of technologies such as solar power.
