Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--PetroChina Hohhot Petrochemical is advancing a 1.2 million-ton-per-year ethane-to-ethylene project with an investment of $3.33 billion, which is currently in the early preparation stage. The main unit also includes 400,000 tons per year high-density polyethylene, 400,000 tons per year linear low-density polyethylene and 1.3 million tons per year of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS).
Ethylene is usually made in a process called steam cracking that requires enormous amounts of heat. Cracking generates about 1.5 metric tons of carbon emissions per ton of ethylene created. PetroChina Hohhot Petrochemical's CCUS unit will capture most of this CO2.
