Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Pharmaceutical company Baxter International Incorporated (NYSE:BAX) (Deerfield, Illinois) recently reported earnings for the first quarter of the 2009 fiscal year. In contrast to many other companies, Baxter reported a year-over-year growth in net income of 20%, moving from $429 million in 1Q08 to $516 million in 1Q09.
The increase in net profit comes despite fairly significant negative impact from foreign currency exchange. Worldwide, Baxter's $2.6 billion of sales represented a 2% decline year over year. Excluding the impact of foreign exchange, however, sales increased 6%. Sales within the U.S., representing $1.2 billion of global sales, increased 5%. The company has also increased spending in research and development 12% from last year.
Industrial Info is currently monitoring approximately $20 million of Baxter's projects in the U.S. and Canada, most of which are maintenance projects. The company is scheduled to kick off construction on a warehouse expansion in Hayward, California, later this year. The project involves increasing the existing biologics warehouse and packaging building by 25,000 square feet, as well as providing additional equipment for the facility. Dome Construction (San Francisco, California) is acting as construction manager for the project.
