Power Industry Exceeding $4 Billion in New Development and Environmental Projects in New England

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). When oil and natural gas prices skyrocket, what is the alternative? Russell Biomass, LLC (Boston, Massachusetts) has proposed to construct a $150 million 50-megawatt biomass-fuelled power plant in Russell, Massachusetts. Like most modern biomass facilities, it will be configured to burn a wide array of wood waste, while controlling air pollution. The plant is scheduled for construction by next summer and will be built on the site of a closed paper mill plant, with a completion date sometime in 2009. Engineering services are being provided by Waldron Engineering & Construction, Incorporated (Hampton, New Hampshire).

Russell Biomass is one of 84 projects totaling more than $4 billion being developed in New England, which includes Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. These projects are currently in various stages of pre-construction activity from pre-planning to advanced engineering.

Also in Massachusetts, a $450 million flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubber project is scheduled at the largest power station in New England, Dominion Energy’s (NYSE:D )(Richmond, Virginia) Brayton Point Power Station (Somerset, Massachusetts).

Site preparation began this past winter on two 241-megawatt coal/gas Alstom tangential-fired dry bottom boilers. The two units will have dry scrubbers installed as well as tie-ins performed by the winter of 2007. The 643-megawatt Unit #3 will have a wet scrubber installed by 2010. Wheelabrator Air Pollution Control (Pittsburg, Pennsylvania) has been selected to provide engineering and construction services.

Kicking off this fall is a $10 million boiler rebuild at Dominion’s 82-megawatt Unit #1 at the Salem Harbor Power Station (Salem, Massachusetts). The coal/oil unit includes a Babcock & Wilcox front-fired dry bottom boiler.

The Public Service Company of New Hampshire (Manchester, New Hampshire) will also be investing $200 million on a scrubber project at its coal-fired Merrimack Power Station (Bow, New Hampshire) to kick off in 2010.
