Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Specialty contractor Primoris Services Corporation (Dallas, Texas) is in a good position to continue developing renewable and gas-fired projects across the U.S. Power Industry, including several high-profile projects for individual industrial customers. Industrial Info is tracking roughly $13 billion worth of active and proposed projects featuring Primoris' services, about $6 billion of which is attributed to a major data center development oriented toward artificial intelligence (AI).

While solar power-generation projects account for about one-third of total investment value for projects with Primoris attached, the biggest development in the contractor's portfolio is a natural gas-fueled hub for the tech industry: Crusoe Energy Systems Incorporated's (Denver, Colorado) Longhorn Data Center Campus in Abilene, Texas, better known as Stargate. Announced with the support of U.S. President Donald Trump in February, the complex is designed to supply as many as 400,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) provided by Nvidia (Santa Clara, California) with 1.2 gigawatts (GW) of power generated onsite.

Primoris is performing engineering services on three phases of Stargate under construction: buildings 3, 4 and 5, each valued at $2 billion. The full development is part of a nationwide, $100 billion data-center buildout effort with financing from equity investors such as OpenAI (San Francisco, California), Oracle (Austin, Texas), SoftBank (Tokyo, Japan) and MGX Fund Management Limited (Abu Dhabi, UAE). "We're currently looking at or vetting close to about $1 billion in natural gas projects tied to data centers throughout the U.S. in the coming years," said David King, the chief executive officer of Primoris, in a recent quarterly earnings-related conference call. King also said his company "saw a great uptick on the industrial side in the bookings around data centers" during the most recently completed quarter.

King also said his company's near-term prospects in the solar-generation market remain positive, despite concerted pushback against renewables from the Trump administration: "Based on our assessment of the market conditions currently, we do not anticipate material changes to our revenue or new contract signings in 2025. Many of our customers have solar panels and materials needed to continue executing on the projects under contract, and many potential projects that are being evaluated have domestic supply."

Primoris is performing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for solar-generation projects in two of the hottest places in the U.S.: the Mojave Desert and the Texas border. AES Corporation (Arlington, Virginia) hired Primoris to develop its Bellefield Solar Plant in California City, California, the $530 million first phase of which is in its final stages. Like the $570 million second phase, it is designed to generate 500 megawatts (MW) from photovoltaic (PV) panels provided by BYD (Shenzhen, China). The second phase of the project is set to wrap up in the first quarter of 2026; the full, 1-GW complex will include 500 MW of battery storage. Repsol S.A. (Madrid, Spain) is employing Primoris for its $771 million Outpost Solar Plant in Laredo, Texas, which is designed to use more than 1.38 million PV panels provided by Siemens AG (Munich, Germany) to generate 514 MW. The project is slated to finish construction toward the end of the year. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed plant profile and project report.

"With respect to backlog, we ended the quarter with $11.4 billion in total backlog compared to $11.9 billion at the end of 2024," said Ken Dodgen, the chief financial officer of Primoris, in the earnings call. "The Energy segment backlog decreased $567 million primarily due to the timing of new solar awards, which we expected to be softer in the first and second quarters, after a strong second half of bookings last year."
