Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Fortescue Metals Group (ASX:FMG) has completed the final commissioning for its Solomon Hub iron ore mine and processing plant project. The company announced that production commenced from its Firetail deposit on May 6. The mine is located about 60 kilometres north of the industrial town of Tom Price, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The mine is the first stage of the Solomon Hub project, which is estimated to produce a total 60 million tonnes of iron ore per year.

The Firetail deposit will account for 20 million tonnes per year, while the remaining 40 million tonnes will be extracted from the Kings deposit. Fortescue plans to expand the Solomon Hub operations in the second phase of the project, which will focus on a targeted production of 100 million tonnes per year. Production commencement at Solomon Hub marks the addition of a third operational iron ore mine in the last five years. Fortescue's other two mines are Cloudbreak and Christman Creek in Newman, Western Australia.

The $3.2 billion Solomon Hub project includes a 135-megawatt (MW) dual-power station, which is undergoing its final commissioning and will be operational by June 2013. The power station has been built by Transalta Australia Limited and will be operated by Transfield Worley Power Services.

Final commissioning at the Solomon Hub processing facility began in November 2012, and Fortescue expects the production to ramp up quickly, taking the company's capacity to a total of 115 million tonnes per year. Leading engineering firm Calibre Projects Pty Limited provided design engineering services for the Solomon Hub and is expected to be a part of the future expansion phase. Turn-key solution provider RCR Tomlinson Limited (Perth) handled the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and oversaw the pre-commissioning of the processing facilities. RCR Tomlinson's scope of work also involved structural, mechanical and piping (SMP) aspect of the project, and the contract was awarded for a total $600 million. Mining operations at Solomon Hub will be handled by Leighton Contractors (ASX:LEI), a subsidiary of Leighton Holdings, and a contract amounting to $1.45 billion was signed in November 2012. Under the contract, Leighton will operate an open cut mining fleet, processing plant and associated infrastructure.

Commencement of the mine provides several opportunities to the local aboriginal communities through sustainable employment and business development. Fortescue also announced that the development of the Solomon Hub will involve approximately $200 million worth of contracts over next five years for local businesses.
