October 2, 2023--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than $3.6 billion worth of projects under construction in Minnesota. Thanks to a large light rail project, the Industrial Manufacturing Industry leads the state in regard to the value of these projects, followed in a distant second place by the Power Industry.

Accounting for a substantial portion of Minnesota's project spending is Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority's (Minneapolis, Minnesota) Green Line extension, also known as the Southwest Light Rail Project, which will add 14.5 miles of track to the Minneapolis/St. Paul light rail system. When completed, the line will connect downtown Minneapolis with downtown St. Paul, with 15 new stations on the route. An additional station will be constructed at a later date. The project kicked off in early 2019, with C.S. McCrossan Incorporated (Maple Grove, Minnesota) acting as the general contractor. The project requires 29 new bridges and the modification of seven existing bridges, two tunnels and more than 100 retaining walls. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2026 or early 2027. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for more details.

The light rail project dwarfs other Industrial Manufacturing projects, which include a grassroot distribution center from delivery giant FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX) (Memphis, Tennessee). FedEx last year announced plans to construct the distribution center on a part of a former golf course in Rosemount, on the southern outskirts of the metroplex. General contractor RJ Ryan Construction Incorporated (Mendota Heights, Minnesota) kicked off construction earlier this year. The 548,000-square-foot distribution center is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Subscribers can click here for more information on the project.

Trailing behind the Industrial Manufacturing Industry by project value is the Power Industry, which as a sign of the times, is dominated by renewable energy and a former coal-fired plant's ash pond closure. Two windfarm repowers are underway in the state. Xcel Energy Incorporated (NASDAQ:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is underway with a repower of its Grand Meadow Windfarm near Dexter. The project kicked off in 2022 and entails replacing 67 turbines rated at 1.5 megawatts (MW) with 1.6-MW turbines featuring larger rotors, upgraded gearboxes and other associated components.

About 160 miles due west in Rushmore, Greenbacker Renewable Energy Company LLC (Portland, Maine) is repowering its Community Wind South Windfarm by replacing the facility's 15 old 2.05-MW turbines with 2.2-MW Vestas turbines, increasing nameplate generation capacity from 30.75 MW to 33 MW. Both this and the Xcel project are expected to be completed by the end of the year. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports.

Otter Tail Corporation (NASDAQ:OTTR) (Fergus Fall, Minnesota) retired its 138-MW Hoot Lake power plant in Fergus Falls in 2021 and began the dismantlement and demolition of the plant soon thereafter. Now, to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Coal Combustion Residuals rule, the 3.8-acre ash landfill at the plant is being capped. The project kicked off earlier this year and is expected to be completed in late 2025. Subscribers can click here for more information.

Trailing just behind the Power Industry in terms of project value is the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry. Minnesota's own Mayo Clinic (Rochester) is expanding its Rochester campus by constructing an 11-story, 176,000-square-foot building to expand research and development in emerging medical and scientific technologies. The project kicked off in 2021 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Minnesota's other Pharma-Biotech projects are in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area, such as the University of Minnesota's (Minneapolis) addition to its teaching laboratories at its Minneapolis campus. The project is unique in that rather than entirely replacing an old building built in 1928, the original building will be renovated, and additions made in the 1950s will be demolished. Replacing the 1950s construction will be more than 91,000 square feet that has been built to modern standards and equipped with research and instruction equipment for the life sciences, chemistry and related disciplines. Subscribers to Industrial Info's GMI Pharmaceutical-Biotech can learn more by viewing the reports on the Rochester and Minneapolis projects.
