Reliance to Produce Purified Terephthalic Acid as Part of Dahej Petrochemical Plant Expansion

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Reliance Industries Limited (BSE:500325) (Mumbai, India) plans to expand the Dahej petrochemicals plant complex in Gandhar, Gujarat. The total project value of the expansion is estimated to be $1.8 billion over several years.

Several new units will be added as part of this expansion, including a purified terephthalic acid (PTA) unit and, later on, a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) unit, a captive power plant (CPT), and an effluent treatment plant (ETP). The PTA unit addition will be the first project in this expansion plan, but at this point, there is no timeline for the remaining units.

The plant currently produces 800,000 tons per year of ethylene oxide, ethylene glycol, ethylene, polyvinyl chloride and high-density polyethylene. The proposed capacity of the new PTA unit is 1.1 million tons per year. The initial planning of the project has been completed, and preliminary engineering has begun for the project. The engineering, procurement and construction consultant for the project is AKER Solutions India. All the project's contract management will be handled by Reliance Projects. The invitation to tender bids is planned to open in April 2011.The construction is scheduled to begin in September 2011, if there are no delays. The completion of the project is scheduled for May 2014.
