Ridgefield Farms South Dakota Beef Plant Construction Project Moves Forward with New Contractor

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated Houston, Texas). Start-up cooperative- owned beef processing venture Richfield Farms LLC (Huron, South Dakota) is once again moving forward with plans to build a new beef processing plant in Huron, South Dakota.

In April 2005, construction of the project began under the direction of Suitt Construction Company (Greenville, North Carolina. Suitt performed about 90% of the site preparation activities, before a dispute over building costs brought the project to a halt. Richfield Farms found Gleeason Constructors LLC (Sioux Falls, Iowa), which bought out Suitt's general construction contract. Gleeason is currently redesigning the estimated $27 million project, and is presently accepting and reviewing bids from various trades to proceed with construction.

The scope of the project is also being changed from a complete slaughtering operation covering some 100,000 square feet to only a beef packing and fabrication operation, encompassing 70,000 square feet of new building construction.

Construction is expected to restart around July or August of 2005, and is expected to take about a year to complete.

Once the plant becomes operational, Richfield plans to hire about 250 employees to run the plant, which will produce premium Hereford beef products to customers throughout South Dakota.
