Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Brazilian pulp and paper company Rigesa Celulose, Papel e Embalagems Ltda (Sao Paulo, Brazil) plans to shut down its paper mill in the city of Valinhos, Sao Paulo, during the third quarter of 2012. Because a new 2,000-ton-per-month paper machine is being installed in another industrial complex in Tres Barras (Santa Catarina, Brazil), a project to make some upgrades in one of the Valinhos mill's paper machines was cancelled.

After a detailed analysis of the current and future needs of the plant, company officials have decided to close down the facility on August 31, because it was difficult to project the long-term viability of the mill. It has not yet been decided if the machinery at the mill will be dismantled and sold, or relocated to another facility. The 1,200 people that are employed at the paper plant are being assisted in finding new job opportunities, and some of them will work in other operational units owned by the company.

The Valinhos paper mill started operations in 1942, and it has the capacity to manufacture 8,000 tons of paper per month. At present, approximately 1,200 people work at the facility.
