Summary
As Pattern Energy completes its of purchase of Cordelio Power, New York has given the green light for Cordelio to construct a 300-MW solar farm in the center of the state.Movement for Cordelio
The past few days have been big ones for Toronto-based renewable energy developer Cordelio Power. As fellow Canadian company Pattern Energy announced the completion of its acquisition of Cordelio, New York state regulators gave the green light for a large Cordelio solar project in the state. On Friday, Pattern Energy announced that it had completed the purchase of the renewable energy developer, whose 1.55-gigawatt portfolio spans the U.S. and Canada. As part of the acquisition, Pattern "also acquired the majority of Cordelio's development pipeline in key U.S. markets," according to a company release, and just as the sale was finalized, one of the those projects in development hit paydirt in New York.
New York Approval
That project is the planned Flat Creek solar facility in Montgomery County, in the center of the state. On Friday, New York's Office of Renewable Energy Siting and Electric Transmission (ORES) awarded Cordelio the final siting permit for the project. While most of Cordelio's many other solar projects in the state call for smaller installations of around 20 MW each, the Flat Creek project, weighing in at 300 MW, is another matter.Cordelio's plans for Flat Creek have been in development for some years; Industrial Info released its initial reports on the project in 2022, providing updates toward the close of the last year. Cordelio's plans suggest two distinct phases of the project that overlap for much of their timelines. Initial construction would be for a 200-MW portion of the project, followed by the start a few months later of the construction of another 100 MW. Cordelio said it was aiming for a startup in late 2028 or early 2029. Other New York Projects
Most of Cordelio's other projects in the state are for smaller 20-MW plants, and most of these remain in the planning and engineering stage and are in different stages of the permitting process. One exception to this is the company's 20-MW Suneast Valley solar plant in Owego, on which Cordelio's chosen engineering, procurement and construction contractor, SOLV Energy, is wrapping up construction.A Second New York Approval
The approval of the Cordelio project was actually one of two approvals issued by New York's ORES board on Friday. The second approval was for Liberty Renewables' Agricola wind project in Cayuga County. That project, covered by IIR since 2021, will include 24 turbines, each rated at slightly more than 4 MW, to provide up to 99 MW of nameplate generating capacity. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report. While the windfarm was previously cancelled, Liberty Renewables is now aiming for a 2028 startup.Key Takeaways
