Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Renewable energy developers BrightNight LLC (West Palm Beach, Florida) and Cordelio Power LP (Toronto, Ontario) have received a $414 million financing package for a joint venture solar power facility in Arizona, which they are building for BOCA bn, a group of which they are co-members and that owns the plant, benefitting from a power purchase agreement (PPA) negotiated by BrightNight.
BrightNight and Cordelio began work on the Box Canyon solar farm in Pinal County, Arizona, in late 2022. The facility will feature solar panels manufactured by First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona) that will provide 300 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy to the state grid beginning in 2025.
Earlier in 2022, before the commencement of construction, BrightNight had negotiated a PPA for the plant's output with Southwest Public Power Agency Incorporated (SPPA) (Mesa, Arizona), a group of 21 utility districts and service providers that provide power and irrigation to its members and is working on reducing the group's carbon emissions. However, the July 2022 PPA is for more than just solar power, also stipulating SPPA's purchase of 600 megawatt-hours of battery storage power.
In announcing the recent financing details, BrightLight and Cordelio made no mention of the battery storage component of the project, although construction on it would probably begin in 2025, around the time the solar plant is completed, putting it on track to begin providing power in 2026. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can learn more by viewing by the project reports on the solar farm and battery storage projects.
The Box Canyon project represents only a small sliver of Cordelio and BrightNight's renewable power plans, of which Industrial Info is tracking more than $8 billion of potential North American projects between the two companies.
Two of the BrightNight projects expected to begin construction soonest are bound for Kentucky. Later this year, BrightNight is expected to begin work on its Ragland solar farm in Paducah, which will provide 125 MW of power when completed next year. In early 2025, BrightNight plans to begin work on the Starfire combined solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) on a 7,000-acre site in Perry County, Kentucky, that is home to a retired coal mine. Both the solar and BESS components will be able to provide 210 MW of power when completed in 2026. Three expansions are planned for Starfire, which extend into the 2030s, each adding 200 MW of both solar and battery capacity. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the reports on the Ragland and Starfire projects.
One of BrightNight's largest projects will join the Box Canyon facility in Arizona--this time in the Greater Phoenix area. The Eagle Eye project would provide 406 MW of solar power from more than 1.7 million bifacial solar panels and up to 400 MW of battery power when the sun isn't shining. Current plans call for construction to begin in mid-2026, putting the facility on track to begin producing power the following year. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.
Cordelio's active projects span the U.S. and include both solar and wind power. A substantial portion of the company's planned projects are bound for New York state, where Cordelio is planning solar facilities ranging in size from 4 MW to 300 MW. The largest of these projects is the Flat Creek solar farm near Sprakers, which is planned to begin providing 200 MW of power in 2027, followed by an additional 100 MW in 2028. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the related project reports.
Cordelio also has more than $2 billion worth of active wind power projects. On the books to start construction next year is the Knox County Windfarm in Missouri. The facility is expected to use about 100 3-MW wind turbines to provide 300 MW of power when completed in late 2026. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
