Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 674-megawatt Salem Harbour conversion project is on track to be online in fall 2017. The project, which is located near Boston, in Salem, Massachusetts, is adding two natural gas units to replace the now closed coal-fired power units. Iberdrola Engineering and Construction (Overland Park, Kansas) is serving as the engineering, procurement and construction firm on the project. The project is owned by Footprint Power LLC (Bridgewater, New Jersey), which will be responsible for operations and maintenance once the project has achieved commercial operation.

The project will be built at the existing Salem Harbour Station, which originally opened in 1951. It will utilize two General Electric (NYSE:GE) high-efficiency combustion turbines, capable of operating on a dual-fuel configuration that provides efficiency, reliability, and operational and fuel flexibility. Natural gas will be delivered from the Algonquin Gas Transmission pipeline system to the Salem Harbour facility through a new pipeline owned and operated by Spectra Energy Corporation (NYSE:SE) (Houston, Texas). The project started in fall 2014 and is expected to be operational by October this year.

Salem Harbour Station originally operated as a coal-fired power plant for 65 years, but was decommissioned in May 2014. The demolition of the existing four units took place soon after. The power plant is now being replaced by two new state-of-the-art combined-cycle units that will provide grid stability for thousands of residents in the Northeastern U.S. This project has a total investment of more than $750 million.
