Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Dynegy Incorporated (NYSE:DYN) (Houston, Texas) plans to shut down the last remaining coal-fired power plant in Massachusetts this week. The 1,600-megawatt (MW) Brayton Point Power Station in Somerset, Massachusetts, is scheduled to close permanently on June 1.

The closure of the plant was first announced in 2013, when the facility was owned by Energy Capital Partners (Short Hills, New Jersey), before Dynegy acquired the plant. The closure comes in spite of previous owner Dominion Energy Incorporated (NSYE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) completing a $350 million sulfur-dioxide control project on the plant in 2012. The plant began operating in 1963.

Also on the books is the closure of the plant's three coal ash ponds in accordance with the Coal Combustion Residuals rule. The closure and environmental remediation could take up to four years to complete and will cost an estimated $343.5 million.

The closure comes along with many coal-fired closures throughout the U.S. as power companies continue to build out natural gas-fired and renewables facilities in the face of more stringent environmental legislation. For more information on coal-fired closures and how the situation affects the coal sector, see May 18, 2017, article - Coal Power Plant Closures to Cut Coal Demand by 28 Million Tons or More.

Industrial Info is tracking several natural gas power and renewables projects in Massachusetts. Currently under construction is Footprint Power LLC's (Salem, Massachusetts) 674-MW natural gas-fired power station in Salem. As a sign of the times, the plant is being constructed at the site of a previous coal- and oil-fired facility that was owned by Dominion and closed in 2014. Construction on the project is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year. Iberdrola Engineering and Construction (Overland Park, Kansas) is acting as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor on the project, which began shortly after the Dominion closure.

Also on the books is NRG Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NRG) (Princeton, New Jersey) 330-MW natural gas-fired unit addition at the Canal Power Station in Sandwich, Massachusetts. Construction of the turbine is expected to kick off in the fourth quarter of this year and be completed by the end of 2020. Burns & McDonnell Incorporated (Kansas City, Missouri) is acting as EPC contractor on the project.

In addition to natural gas-fired projects, Massachusetts remains a prime location for proposed offshore windfarms in the U.S., although offshore wind has, to date, met with little success in the U.S. Among these proposed projects is Cape Wind Associates LLC's (Boston, Massachusetts) proposed 468-MW offshore windfarm in Nantucket Sound, five miles south of Cotuit, Massachusetts. The proposed windfarm would use 130 3.6-MW Siemens wind turbine-generator sets plus balance-of-plant equipment to supply renewable power to the local grid. Siemens is acting as design-build firm on the project, which if started, would take an estimated two and half years to complete.
