The $843 million contract between Samsung and YPFB awards the execution of the detailed engineering, construction and start up, as well as a two-year period to operate and perform maintenance at the facility. The complex will consist of one urea unit with a production capacity of 650,000 metric tons per year, Toyo technology, and one ammonia unit with a production capacity of 400,000 metric tons per year, with KBR technology. The turn-key contractor is currently performing the preliminary engineering and civil construction is expected to start in April 2013. The operations are scheduled to begin by mid-2015.
In addition to this undertaking, Bolivia's YPFB is planning a number of new investments in the petrochemical sector. One of them is the construction of a new polyethylene complex, which is to be located in Gran Chaco, Tarija state, and will be receiving its feed from the Gran Chaco liquids separation plant, which began construction last August and is due to be online in 2014. The plant will process gas to produce liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), ethane, natural gas and isopentane.
