Samsung Delays Startup of Texas Semiconductor Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Samsung's first fabrication facility at its semiconductor campus in Taylor, Texas, likely will not be operational until 2026. The company previously had announced a July 2024 startup date.

According to local media, Samsung will delay ordering the $10 billion project's production machinery until a decision is made on what type of chips its facility will produce. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Plant and Project databases can learn more from a detailed plant profile and project report.

Samsung could change the plant's product from the proposed 4-nanometer (nm) chip to the newer 2-nm variety, which would speed up data processing and reduce power consumption. This would make it a better fit for artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Samsung says it will make a final decision on the product before the end of the third quarter. How this would affect the construction schedule for the remaining nine phases of the Taylor campus is yet to be seen.
