Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), acting as principal buyer under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy, has launched the qualification process for Saudi Arabia's second group of battery energy storage system (BESS) projects, advancing the Kingdom's renewable energy and grid reliability goals.
Industrial Info Resources data find 21 BESS projects across Saudi Arabia, worth more than US$16.02 billion.
The Group 2 BESS program comprises six independent storage projects with a combined capacity of 3,000 megawatts (MW) and 12,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of storage based on four-hour duration systems. The projects will be developed under a build-own-operate (BOO) model, with successful developers holding full ownership in the project special purpose vehicles (SPVs).
The portfolio includes the 500-MW/2,000-MWh Samha project in the Qassim Region, Al-Leeth, Khulis and Ashyrah projects in the Makkah Region, Al-Henakiyah in the Madinah Region, and Sadawi in the Eastern Region. Subscribers to the Industrial Info Resources Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can learn more by viewing the related project reports.
Each project company will sign a long-term storage services agreement with SPPC to develop and operate the facilities as independent storage provider (ISP) projects.
Alongside the BESS initiative, SPPC has also opened qualification for future solar, wind and energy storage tenders, supporting the objectives of Saudi Arabia's National Renewable Energy Program, which aims to raise the share of renewables and storage in the national energy mix to around 50% by 2030.
