Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Saudi Arabia plans to deploy 48 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery energy-storage system (BESS) capacity by 2030. To achieve this goal, the kingdom has established strategic partnerships and launched several key BESS projects across the country.
In the first quarter of 2025, the Saudi Electricity Company (Riyadh) (SEC) commissioned a 500-megawatt (MW)/2,000-megawatt-hour (MWh) BESS facility in Bisha. Additionally, eight large-scale standalone BESS projects, with a total capacity of 4.5GW/20.3GWh, are under development through major engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firms.
Meanwhile, the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) (Riyadh) has initiated the tendering process for the first round of independent storage provider (ISP) projects, which will add 2GW/8GWh of BESS capacity across four locations. Other large-scale BESS projects are in the pipeline and will be tendered in upcoming rounds by SPPC.
These initiatives align with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 strategy, which aims to diversify the nation's energy mix and generate 50% of its electricity from renewable sources.
Industrial Info is tracking 17 BESS projects across Saudi Arabia, worth more than US$14 billion. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here for the list of project reports.
