Scotland Pledges $191 Million for Offshore Wind Hub

Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Scotland's government is hoping to leverage almost US$2 billion in private investment into offshore wind development by announcing £150 million (US$191 million) in support for next year.

Outlining the budget for 2025-26, Shona Robison, Scotland's cabinet secretary for finance, said: "I can announce that we will use that capital funding to make a significant strategic decision to invest in this nation's green future. I can announce today that we will almost triple our investment in offshore wind to £150 million (US$191 million) next year. This money will help leverage private investment of £1.5 billion (US$1.9 billion) in the infrastructure and manufacturing facilities critical to growing the sector. It..underlines our commitment to invest up to £500 million (US$638 million) over five years. Aberdeen is perfectly placed to become a global hub for green energy. And to support this, we will establish a Scottish Government hub for offshore wind in the North-East to provide an additional route for industry to engage with our teams."

The funding will be used to build the infrastructure and manufacturing facilities needed for the proposed Aberdeen Offshore Wind Hub. Aberdeen has been the traditional home of the U.K.'s oil and gas industry activities in the North Sea, but the sector has been in decline for some time. Scotland is hoping to reinvent the region as the home for green energy manufacturing and investment. Industrial Info is tracking 57 offshore wind projects in the U.K. worth more than US$186 billion in investment, with the vast majority of projects located in the North Sea. The new funding has been welcomed by many companies and industry bodies involved in the sector. "At a time of constrained public finances, it is welcome that the Scottish Government has prioritised investment in renewable energy given it is our greatest opportunity for economic growth," commented Claire Mack, chief executive of Scottish Renewables (Glasgow, Scotland). "In particular, we are pleased to see confirmation of the next tranche of funding previously committed to the offshore wind supply chain. We will work closely with the Scottish Government to help shape how this funding can be used as part of the wider investment landscape in order to secure the flow of significant private capital into infrastructure and manufacturing facilities that will help Scotland optimise the opportunity brought by offshore wind."

Maggie McGinlay, chief executive of private sector-led venture ETZ, said: "The decision to locate a new offshore wind hub in Aberdeen is hugely welcome and a positive step toward the north east of Scotland positioning itself as an internationally recognised renewables energy cluster, particularly for offshore wind. The importance of speeding up the planning and consenting of offshore wind projects, so they are commercially available, is vital if Scotland is to emerge as global leaders in this sector. Therefore, it makes perfect sense to locate this new body in a region that has proximity to the vast majority of offshore wind projects in Scotland and is home to the highest concentration of energy supply chain companies in the U.K."
