Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--The second phase of the Borkum West II offshore windfarm in the German North Sea has moved forward with Senvion SE (FWB:RPW) (Hamburg, Germany) winning the 203-megawatt (MW) turbine contract.
Senvion), formerly known as REpower Systems, will supply 32 turbines from its 6.XM series for the newly named Trianel Windpark Borkum II project, rated at more than 6 MW each. When commissioned in 2019, the windfarm will be capable of powering around 210,000 households annually.
The windfarm, being developed by Trianel Energie GmbH (Aachen, Germany), is located 45 kilometers (km) north of the island Borkum in the German North Sea. It is close to the much smaller Alpha Ventus windfarm, which started operations in 2009 and is equipped with six 5M 126 Senvion offshore turbines. At the Borkum West II project, the turbines will be installed in a water depth of 25 to 35 meters.
"We appreciate the confidence that the project-consortium Trianel shows in our turbines," commented Jürgen Geissinger, chief executive officer of Senvion. "This contract confirms that we are setting standards in the cost-effective generation of offshore wind energy and we will further consolidate our strong position in the offshore wind-energy market with the Senvion 6.2M152."
The final investment decision for the project should be taken in the first half of 2017, with construction slated to start early the following year.
"In the first stage of the Trianel Wind Farm Borkum, we have already laid the essential foundations for the expansion of the municipal offshore engagements. Therefore this project is of high commercial interest for local companies", explained Klaus Horstick, managing director of the Trianel Windpark Borkum II project.
The area around the island of Borkum is already in use for offshore wind. Early last year, Industrial Info reported that the 200-MW Borkum West II windfarm by Trianel produced its first power. It is now grid-connected and was fully commissioned last summer. For additional information, see February 11, 2015, article - Borkum West Generates First Offshore Power.
