Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Shanxi province, the largest coal producer in China, has attached high importance to the development of new energy, especially of clean renewable energies, the Development and Reform Commission of Shanxi Province recently announced.
Based on a metrological assessment and several site investigations, Shanxi was found to be rich in wind-power resources. These resources are mainly distributed at the Wutai Mountain, Lvliang Mountain and the northwestern Shanxi regions where the local annual average wind speed is above 3 m/s.
According to the Wind Power Development Plan proposed by central Chinas Shanxi province, 19 wind-power projects with an installed capacity of 2,300 megawatts (MW), an annual power output of 4.6 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), will be built by 2020. Output of these wind power projects will account for more than 3% of the total power output in Shanxi. Compared with conventional coal-fired units, these projects could save more than 3 million metric tons of coal consumption.
Currently, there are five wind-power projects under construction: in Youyu, Pinglu, Shenchi, Datong Xinrong and Zuoyun. The total installed capacity of these projects will be 230 MW with a total investment of $306.7 million. The foundation for each substation and wind-power-generating unit is under construction. Equipment procurement has been ordered and is expected to put be into operation in next year.
Although the cost of wind power is currently higher than thermal power with the support policies from the state on grid connection, dispatching and tax exempts wind power is not only environmental and free from pollutants but also has considerable economic benefit.
In addition, construction of two other wind power projects in Youyu and Fanshi is to be started this year. The number of wind power projects under construction in Shanxi province will be increased to seven later this year.
