Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Siemens (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) said it and consortium partner Daewoo Engineering and Construction (Seoul, South Korea) have handed the Shuweihat S3 combined-cycle, gas-fired power plant in the emirate of Abu Dhabi to its owner for commercial operation, Siemens said the project is its fifth power plant for Abu Dhabi.
The plant is owned by Shuweihat Asia Power Company (Sapco), a consortium comprising Sumitomo Corporation (Tokyo, Japan) (20.4%); the Korea Electric Power Corporation (NYSE:KEP) (Seoul) (19.6%); and the local utility, Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (Adwea) (60%).
The 1,636-megawatt (MW) plant is located 260 kilometers west of Abu Dhabi. Shuweihat Asia O&M Company will operate the $1.6 billion plant.
The plant will meet growing demand from the rapidly growing population and will also deliver power to the emirate's expanding industry including the nearby Ruwais refinery.
Siemens has supplied four SGT5-4000F gas turbines, two SST5-4000 steam turbines, six SGen5-1000A and SGen5 generators and the electrical and SPPA-T3000 instrumentation and control (I&C) system.
The company has also signed a long term service agreement for the gas turbines and supplied on a turnkey basis a gas insulated 400 kilovolt (kV) 8DQ1 switchgear unit on a turnkey basis, including protection and I &C equipment to connect the power plant to the grid.
Daewoo Engineering & Construction was responsible for the site construction and civil works, heat recovery and steam generators and main transformers, ancillary and auxiliary systems in the balance of plant.
