Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Siemens Energy (Erlangen, Germany), a subsidiary of Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany), recently secured a contract from Energie Baden-Wurttemberg AG (FRA:EBK) (EnBW) (Karlsruhe, Germany) to supply 21 wind turbines of the SWT 2.3-93 series for the Baltic 1 offshore windfarm, Germany's first commercial offshore wind power project in the Baltic Sea. The contract reportedly represents a mid-range, double-digit million dollar investment. Siemens will commence maritime civil engineering work for the Baltic 1 windfarm in early 2010. The project is scheduled for commissioning later that year.
The Baltic 1 windfarm is one of four offshore wind power projects with a combined power generation capacity of 1,200 megawatts (MW) secured by EnBW in May 2008. The 48.3-MW Baltic 1 project, and the 328.6-MW Kriegers Flak windfarm with 80 wind turbines will be developed in the Baltic Sea. The Hochseewindpark Nordsee and He Dreiht windfarms, each with 80 wind turbines and a power generation capacity of 400 MW, will be set up in the North Sea. The four projects entail a combined investment of $3.97 billion.
The SWT 2.3-93 wind turbine operates automatically and self-starts at an average wind speed of 3-5 meters per second. Power output from the turbine varies almost linearly with wind speed. The output is regulated at the rated capacity of 2.3 MW at wind speeds of 13-14 meters per second. The turbine operates at a maximum wind speed of 25 meters per second, beyond which it is shut down through feathering of the rotor blades. To date, Siemens has installed about 1,374 wind turbines of the SWT 2.3-93 series worldwide. Siemens has installed more than 7,793 MW of wind turbines with a combined power generation capacity of 8,813 MW, including 600 MW of offshore wind turbines. The firm has an order backlog of more than 3,300 MW. Siemens is currently engaged in the development of five offshore wind farms in Denmark and the United Kingdom.
Earlier this month, the firm secured a $595-million contract from StatoilHydro ASA (NYSE:STO) (Stavanger, Norway) and Statkraft (Oslo, Norway) to supply 88 wind turbines of the SWT 3.6-107 series for the 315-MW Sheringham Shoal offshore windfarm in the U.K. In March, Siemens entered into an agreement with DONG Energy (Fredericia, Denmark) to supply up to 500 turbines for the latter's upcoming offshore windfarms in Northern Europe.
