Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Gulf Coast town of Freeport, Texas, has long been associated with chemical plants. Dow Chemical Company (NYSE:DOW) (Midland, Michigan) has been the largest employer in the city since the construction of its first facilities in the 1930s. The company's largest integrated site is in Freeport. Industrial Info is tracking 31 projects in the city worth $6.95 billion, either in the Chemical Processing or the Oil & Gas Terminals industry.
The largest project is Dow's $1.7 billion ethylene unit addition to the Freeport Oyster Creek Chemical plant. It includes the construction of an ethane-fed ethylene cracker with a design capacity of 2.6 billion pounds per year of ethylene. The project kicked off in the summer of last year and currently has a May 2017 completion date.
The second-largest project that Industrial Info is tracking is the $1 billion grassroot liquid petroleum gas (LPG) production and export terminal owned by Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) (Houston, Texas). The facility will have a capacity of 4.4 million barrels per month and is being created to meet the growing international demand for U.S.-made butane and propane. Construction kicked off in March 2014 and will be completed next month.
Another project with a total investment value of $1 billion is a grassroot monoethylene glycol plant owned by Kuwait Petroleum Corporation. This plant, which will produce around 1.4 billion pounds per year of monoethylene glycol, will kick off construction in June of next year and is set for completion in May 2019.
