SMEPA Begins Full Commercial Production of $30 Million Expansion Project at Moselle Power Station

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). South Mississippi Electric Power Association (SMEPA) (Hattiesburg, Mississippi) has completed full commercial start-up for the $30 million, 85-megawatt expansion project at the Moselle Power Station located in Jones County, Mississippi.

Construction for the project began in May 2005 and was completed during the first quarter of 2006. SMEPA commenced full operation of the project earlier this month, which consisted of adding a single 85-megawatt natural gas-fired GE Power Systems MS7001EA PG7121 (EA) combustion turbine generator to the existing site. The turbine will be equipped with evaporative cooling to help boost efficiency. The new unit will operate in a simple-cycle peaking configuration increasing Moselle’s current nameplate capacity of 260 megawatts to 340 megawatts, in order to help meet peaking power needs during the summer and winter months.

Allegheny Energy Solutions (Hagerstown, Maryland), a subsidiary of Allegheny Energy, Incorporated (NYSE:AYE), provided the engineering services for the project. Lockwood Greene Constructors, based in Spartanburg, South Carolina, acted as the general contractor.
