Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Solar Choice Pty Limited (Sydney, Australia) plans to build Australia's largest solar photovoltaic energy project, to be located in the northern Victorian shire. The Kerang Solar Farm will deliver 350 megawatts (MW) to the grid, which is enough to power about 75,000 homes.

Kerang Solar is one of four such projects that have been approved for the region by the Gannawarra Shire Council since 2012. The Kerang Solar Farm is in the early design and feasibility phase, and it will proceed to detailed design and analysis in the following months.

Subject to the final grid connection studies, Solar Choice will decide whether to build a new, 14-kilometer (8.7-mile) feeder connection line along the existing, 220-kilovolt (kV) tower line, or a new, onsite substation to feed the electricity into the existing 220-kV power line.

According to Solar Choice's Managing Director Angus Gemmell, the company expects to begin construction by 2016, with a construction period of 12 to 18 months.

Eco for Life Pty Limited (Victoria, Australia) also is developing a 30-MW project south of Kerang. The $38 million project is in the approval phase. Construction is expected to begin by the third quarter of 2014.

Leading large-scale solar farm developer Cleangen Power (Sydney, Australia), which changed its name from AKK Consulting Pty Limited in 2013, also is developing two 30-MW solar projects in the Kerang region. Both projects will be developed in 2014, with commercial operations expected by first-quarter 2015.
