Click on the image at right for a breakdown by fuel type of planned first-quarter power project starts in the Great Lakes region.
Among the top solar projects planned to kick off in the upcoming quarter is Invenergy LLC's (Chicago, Illinois) 150-megawatt (MW) solar farm in Hardin County, Ohio. The facility will use a fixed-tilt system and thin-film modules. The $217 million project is expected to be completed by the end of 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. A battery energy storage system could accompany the solar facility. For more on that project, click here.
Also in Ohio, First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona) plans to kick off construction on a couple of projects in the upcoming quarter. In Chillicothe, about 50 miles south of Columbus, First Solar will construct a 147-MW solar farm, and in Buckskin Township, also south of Columbus, First Solar will construct a 100-MW solar farm. Both projects are expected to take about a year to complete and have a combined total investment value of $271 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Chillicothe and Buckskin Township projects.
While solar power leads the region in terms of overall project value, one of the largest projects planned for the Great Lakes is a wind power project near Ohio, Illinois. Plant owner BlackRock Infrastructure Investment Group (New York, New York) plans to repower its Big Sky Windfarm by replacing 114 vintage Suzlon wind turbines with 97 2.5-MW turbines to generate approximately 240 MW. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Several transmission and distribution projects also are in the works for the region. In northwest Ohio, American Electric Power Incorporated (NYSE:AEP) (Columbus, Ohio) plans to rebuild a 29.4-mile section of 138-kilovolt overhead transmission line from the East Lima substation to the Haviland substation. AECOM (NYSE:ACM) (Los Angeles, California) is the project consultant. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
While grassroot coal-fired project activity has ground to a halt in the U.S., the Great Lakes region still contains many active coal-fired plants, and maintenance activity will be performed on several of them in the upcoming quarter. In China Township, Michigan, about 50 miles northeast of Detroit, DTE Energy (NYSE:DTE) (Detroit) will perform a major overhaul and inspection of the 698-MW Unit 2 at the Belle River Power Station. The maintenance will last for an extended period, starting early in the first quarter and moving into the second quarter. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Several nuclear refueling outages also are planned for the Great Lakes region in the upcoming quarter. In Wisconsin, NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) will perform refueling on the 600-MW Unit 2 at the Point Beach Nuclear Power Station near Two Rivers, on Lake Michigan. BHI Energy (Plymouth, Massachusetts) is the contractor on the project, which is expected to last about 32 days in March and April. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
