Sorgenia Begins Start-Up Tests of Combined-Cycle Power Plant in Southern Italy

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Sorgenia SpA (Milan, Italy) has begun start-up testing of the units at an 800-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle power plant in Modugno in southern Italy's Apulia region.

The plant was built by Alstom Power Italia SpA (Sesto San Giovanni, Italy), a subsidiary of Alstom SA (EPA:ALO) (Levallois-Perret, France), under a turnkey contract. The plant is equipped with one combined-cycle power block consisting of two 260-MW GT26 gas turbines driving one 266-MW Alstom condensing steam turbine. The facility is located near the region's capital city of Bari and will be connected to the high-tension 380-kilovolt national power grid. The plant is expected to be fully operational by July 2009.

Sorgenia is a joint venture between CIR SpA (BIT:CIR) (Milan) and Verbund (WBAG:VER) (Vienna, Austria). Created in 1999 with the name of Energia Spa, Sorgenia is now one of the most important players in Italy's power market with total electricity production near 4.19 million kilowatt-hours.
