Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--The Springsure Creek Coal Mine Project is scheduled to begin construction by the second half 2014. The $684 million (AUD$750 million) project is in the Bowen Basin region of Queensland, approximately 18 miles (30 kilometers) east of Springsure and 24 miles (40 kilometers) south of Emerald. It is estimated that the mine will be in operation for approximately 40 years and will produce up to 11 million metric tons of thermal coal annually.
The Queensland Department of Environmental and Heritage Protection awarded Bandanna Energy Limited (ASX:BND) (Brisbane, Queensland) approval for the project's environmental impact statement (EIS) on November 7, 2013. Bandanna Energy Limited obtained approval for the accommodation village development from the local government on June 12, 2013.
The Springsure Creek Coal Mine Project's development will be performed in two phases. Phase I will establish an underground operation mine to extract thermal coal via the longwall method, and will include the construction of a crushing and screening processing plant to produce 5.5 million metric tons of thermal coal annually. Phase I is expected to be completed by the second half of 2015.
Phase II is expected to begin construction after the completion of Phase I. Phase II will involve the installation of a second longwall system and ramp up the total production to 11 million metric tons of thermal coal annually.
The thermal coal will be transported to the Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal (WICET). The construction work at WICET is approximately 60% complete, and WICET expects to commence its first ore shipment in early 2015. Bandanna Energy Limited plans to transport the thermal coal from its Springsure Creek Mine via either the private build haul road or the overland conveyor system to the rail loadout facility. The rail loadout facility will be connected to the Bauhinia Line. The plan is expected to minimize the environmental impact of the project.
An accommodation village with 300 rooms on a 50-hectare block of land is required for the project's expected employees. The project development will create job opportunities in the region: Approximately 350 people will be employed during the construction period, while 580 people are required during the operation and 40 people for decommissioning.
