Sri Lanka is advancing plans to expand renewable generation and energy-storage infrastructure, with approximately 2,071 megawatts (MW) of solar and 1,264 MW of wind capacity planned by 2030, alongside a government target to introduce around 1,200 MW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) over the next two years.
The BESS programme is already moving into implementation. Procurement for 160 MW/640 megawatt-hours of battery storage has been completed, with the capacity expected to be connected to the grid during October-December 2026. The government has also outlined plans for an additional 560 MW of battery storage to be connected by the end of 2027, contributing toward its broader 1,200 MW storage objective.
The combined development creates opportunities for renewable energy developers, BESS suppliers, engineering, construction and procurement contractors, equipment manufacturers and grid-infrastructure companies as Sri Lanka expands its clean-energy infrastructure.
The program supports Sri Lanka's broader objective of generating 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, strengthening grid flexibility while reducing dependence on conventional generation.
