Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--By the end of 2015, Synergy (Perth, Australia) will decommission the remaining two coal-fired units at the Kwinana Power Station, with the final phase of the Stage C shutdown to occur in October of that year. The closures will reduce the overall capacity of the power plant to 200 megawatts (MW).

The two units slated for shutdown by the end of 2015 have a peak capacity of 400 MW. The closing of units C5 and C6 is a result of the costs associated with rebuilding the units to extend their life, which was evaluated against building new renewable generation power plants.

The shutdown will leave only the 100-MW, high-efficiency gas-fired units, which were installed in 2012. Although the units' retirement will not impact the electricity market in the state, it will affect approximately 100 staff. Synergy plans to shuffle the employees as required within the corporation, and provide redundancy options to others.

Major maintenance on the units' International Combustion (ICAL) coal-fired boilers started at the end of last month and will continue until end of August. Transfield Worley Parsons (Bunbury, Australia) is performing the maintenance. The outage job will focus on the boilers, with minor work to be performed on the turbines.

The plant was built in 1970s in three stages, with two units in each stage; the stage C units became operational in 1978. Kwinana Power Station Stage B was closed in December 2008, and Stage A units were decommissioned in 2011.
