Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). After several years in the planning and development stage, the expansion of a power plant at a pulp and paper mill owned by Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE:WY)(Federal Way, Washington) in Kingsport, Tennessee, has moved a step closer to being realized. In 2001, Industrialinfo.com released a project report detailing plans by the mill's owner at that time, Willamette Industries, to increase electrical generation at the site with the addition of an 80 MW steam turbine generator, as part of a mill modernization. For details see - Willamette Industries Invests $475 Million in Modernization and Power Generation Expansion At Their Kingsport, Tenn. Mill. Weyerhaeuser took control of the Kingsport mill in a merger with Willamette in early 2002, and the power generation phase of the modernization was postponed.
Site preparation on the new unit is slated to begin at the end of 2005, and major construction in January. Engineering and construction services will be performed and managed by Weyerhaeuser. Once online in the fall of 2006, the plant's output will be around 59 MW.
Weyerhaeuser, one of the world's largest integrated forest products companies, was incorporated in 1900. In 2004, sales were $22.7 billion. It has offices or operations in nineteen countries, with customers worldwide. Weyerhaeuser is principally engaged in the growing and harvesting of timber; the manufacture, distribution, and sale of forest products; and real estate construction, development, and related activities.
