Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). In the U.S., nuclear power provides about 15% of the electricity overall, but some states get more power from nuclear plants than others. About 30% of Tennessee Valley Authoritys (TVA) (Chattanooga, Tennessee) power supply comes from its three nuclear power plants: Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Station (Decatur, Alabama), Sequoyah Nuclear Power Station (Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee) and Watts Bar Nuclear Power Station (Spring City, Tennessee).
Project scope is also being developed for a steam generator replacement on the 1,220-megawatt Unit #2 at the Sequoyah Nuclear Power Station in 2010. The estimated $160 million project will involve replacement of four steam generators on a Westinghouse pressurized water reactor (PWR).
Bechtel Power Corporation (Frederick, Maryland) will be providing design and construction services to replace four steam generators this fall at the Watts Bar Nuclear Power Station. Watts Bar is the newest nuclear plant in the U.S., coming online in February 1996. Refueling activities will also be performed during this time on the 1,270-megawatt Westinghouse pressurized water reactor and project completion is expected in December 2006.
Showing its commitment to nuclear power, TVA joined with NuStart Energy Development LLC (Kenneth Square, Pennsylvania) and is proposing to complete construct of the Bellefonte Nuclear Power Station (Hollywood, Alabama). The $3 billion project is scheduled for kick off by 2010. The construction had stopped in 1988, when the plant was at 80% completion.
