Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Tetra Tech Incorporated (NASDAQ:TTEK) (Pasadena, California) has notched up a solid string of contract wins so far this year, with its project backlog hitting record highs and demand growing for its engineering and consulting services, particularly in emerging areas of the domestic energy market. Industrial Info is tracking more than $30 billion worth of active projects involving Tetra Tech, about 80% of which is shared among the liquefied natural gas (LNG), power-generation and mining sectors.

The Power Industry's transmission and distribution sector accounts for the highest number of active projects of any industry sector featuring Tetra Tech, including plans to bring power to some of the most in-need areas of North America. Rocky Mountain Power, the subsidiary of utility PacifiCorp (Portland, Oregon) that delivers electricity to customers in Utah, Wyoming and Idaho, is overseeing the construction of the Gateway West Transmission Line in a joint venture with Idaho Power Company, a subsidiary of Idacorp Incorporated (Boise, Idaho).
The proposed line, which would begin construction in early 2022, depending on the completion of other segments of the sprawling Energy Gateway Transmission Expansion that covers much of the northern Rocky Mountain region, includes a roughly 200-mile segment from the Anticline Substation in Point of Rocks, Wyoming, to the Populus Substation in Downey, Idaho; a roughly 190-mile segment from the Jim Bridger Substation near Point of Rocks to the Populus Substation; and a roughly 130-mile segment from the Midpoint Substation in Jerome, Idaho, to the Hemingway Substation in Melba, Idaho. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the segments originating at the Anticline, Jim Bridger and Midpoint substations.

Tetra Tech also has a few renewable-energy generation projects on its slate, including one that is expected to begin construction before the end of the year: NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) Nutmeg Solar Plant in Enfield, Connecticut, which is expected to generate about 20 megawatts (MW) from photovoltaic panels. Earlier this year, Connecticut's Siting Council issued a declaratory ruling allowing NextEra to build the facility, according to the Journal Inquirer, and the project is expected to wrap up in less than a year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Although energy-related projects account for some of the highest-profile work on Tetra Tech's slate, the mining sector features some of the most labor-intensive work, such as Nevada Copper Corporation's (TSX:NCU) (Vancouver, British Columbia) proposed Pumpkin Hollow aboveground copper mine and concentrator in Yerington, Nevada. The underground phase of the integrated complex is wrapping up and nearing production, and is expected to produce 30,000 tons of copper in its first five years of operations; the aboveground portion, which would not begin construction until first-quarter 2021 at the earliest, is designed to extract 37,000 tons in its first six years.
Tetra Tech is serving as one of several design-engineer contractors for the aboveground portion. The underground portion's fully permitted mineral reserves are estimated at 23.9 million tons over its full 13.5-year mine life, while the aboveground portion would average 386 million tons per year over a 19-year life, according to the company. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In Canada, Kwanika Copper Corporation, a joint venture between Serengeti Resources Incorporated (Vancouver, British Columbia) and Posco International Corporation (Incheon, South Korea), is proposing a copper, gold and silver mine and mill in Fort Saint James, British Columbia. Tetra Tech is among a slew of consultants attached to the project, which is designed to extract 25,000 tons per year of copper, 70,000 ounces per year of gold and 177,300 ounces per year of silver over a 15-year mine life. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
